Preliminary results of an archaeometrical study on red brown wash ware samples from the upper tigris region

Abstract

Yukarı Dicle Bölgesi tarih boyunca önemli gelişmeler ve kültürel etkileşimlere tanıklık etmiştir. Günümüzde ise bu bölge Ilısu Barajı’nın faaliyete geçmesiyle su altında kalma veya barajın etki alanı altında kalma tehlikesiyle karşı karşıyadır. Bu çalışma Yukarı Dicle Vadisi’ndeki çeşitli alanlarda ele geçen Kızıl Kahve Boya Astarlı Mallar’ın (Red Brown Wash Ware: RBWW) karakterizasyonunu içeren bir araştırma projesinin ön sonuçlarını sunmaktadır. Bu seramikler Erken Tunç Çağı’nın sonları ve tüm Orta Tunç Çağı’nda bölgede ortaya çıkmıştır. Mevcut çalışmada temsili RBWW örnekleri için uygulanan kimyasal analiz (XRF) sonuçları seramiklerin üretiminde kullanılan başlangıç hammaddelerindeki farklılık veya benzerliklerin ortaya çıkartılması kapsamında ele alınmıştır. Temel oksitler (SiO2+Al2O3) ve alkali-toprak alkali oksitlerin toplamları (MgO+K2O+Na2O+CaO) ile CaO ve Fe2O3 içerikleri seramiklerin muhtemel yapısal özelliklerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla değerlendirilmiştir

The Upper Tigris region (Turkey) has witnessed significant developments and cultural interactions throughout the history. Today, the region faces the danger of being flooded or left under the impact area of the reservoir lake of Ilısu Dam as it goes into action. This study represents some of the preliminary results of a research project including the characterization of a diagnostic samples of ceramics (Red Brown Wash Ware: RBWW) uncovered at various sites of the Upper Tigris valley. Such ceramics have occurred from the end of the Early Bronze Age (the late second half the 3rd millennium BC) and all through the Middle Bronze Age (the first half of the 2nd millennium BC) in the region. In the present work, the results of chemical analysis (XRF) applied for RBWW samples are evaluated in order to reveal the differences or similarities among the initial raw materials used in production of this type of ware. The sum of the main oxides (SiO2+Al2O3) and the alkaline-earth alkaline oxides (MgO+K2O+Na2O+CaO), together with CaO and Fe2O3 contents, are also separately addressed in order to interpret the probable structural features of the ceramics.
