The effect of Plantago major Linnaeus on serum total sialic acid, lipid-bound sialic acid, some trace elements and minerals after administration of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene in rats
(SAGE, 2012-04) Oto, Gökhan; Ekin, Suat; Özdemir, Hülya; Levent, Abdulkadir; Berber, İsmet
The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of Plantago major Linnaeus (PM) extract on serum total sialic acid (TSA), lipid-bound sialic acid (LSA), some trace elements (copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and iron) and mineral levels (magnesium, calcium and sodium) in Wistar albino rat administrated 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA). Rats were divided into three equal groups (n = 6). Group I comprised the control group, group II was treated with DMBA (100 mg/kg, single dose) and group III was treated with DMBA (100 mg/kg single dose) and aqueous extract of PM 100 mg/kg/day for 60 days. After 60 days, statistical analyses showed that TSA and LSA levels in DMBA and DMBA + PM groups were significantly higher compared to the control group (TSA: p < 0.01, p < 0.05; LSA: p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively). Serum Zn levels were decreased in subjects treated with DMBA (p < 0.01) and DMBA + PM (p < 0.05) compared to the control group values. Serum Cu levels were increased in DMBA group and PM-treated group compared to the control group values. The results of this investigation showed that the levels of TSA and LSA changed significantly, which are sensitive markers for detecting the toxic effects of DMBA. On the other hand, observed decline in Zn levels in rats from DMBA + PM group might be due to decreased generation of free radicals and oxidative stress. Results from this study suggest that PM may be partially effective in preventing carcinogenesis initiated by environmental carcinogen DMBA.

The changes in the serum, liver, kidney protein and genomic DNA profiles in rats treated with 7,12-Dimethylbenz(A) anthracene and Plantago major L.
    (RJPBCS, 2014-01) Berber, İsmet; Ekin, Suat; Levent, Abdulkadir; Oto, Gökhan;
In the study, the changes in the serum, liver, kidney protein and genomic DNA profiles in Wistar albino rats administrated to 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) and Plantagomajor L. were investigated. SDS-PAGE profiling of the serum proteins showed that the levels of two proteins molecular weighing 140.8 kDa and 46.8 kDa were significantly lower on the 0th day of treatment than on the 60th day of application in the groups. Furthermore, two proteins (34.5 and 22.3 kDa) were solely present in DMBA-treated liver cell lysates. On the contrary, the kidney protein profiles did not show significant banding variations in groups. Genomic DNA analysis also confirmed that DNA extracted from liver and kidney cells did not fragment in any of the groups after the 60th study day. The proteins 34.5 and 22.3 kDa in liver cell lysates at the 60th day in DMBA-treated group could be extra-prognostic indicators for severe DMBA toxicity.

Ag-doped HfO2 thin films via sol–gel dip coating method
(Springer Nature, 2019-10-01) Pakma, Osman; Kaval, Şehmus; Kari̇per, İshak Afşin
In this study, undoped and Ag-doped HfO2 thin films were deposited on glass substrates by means of sol–gel dip coating method. These films were then thermally annealed at 500 °C for 1 h. The structural and optical properties of undoped and Ag-doped HfO2 thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV–Vis spectrometry and scanning electron microscope. The results of this analysis were compared and interpreted with the results obtained in literature by various methods of coating with HfO2. The X-ray diffraction peaks of the films paired with monoclinic HfO2 crystalline peaks. The refractive indices of the films decreased with doping Ag, at 500 nm wavelengths. The optical band gap values of Ag-doped HfO2 thin films increased with doping Ag. The porous structures were observed on the surface films, especially with 5% Ag doping.

Hydrothermal synthesis of magnetic nanocomposite from biowaste matrix by a green and one-step route: Characterization and pollutant removal ability
    (Elsevier, 2019-04) Sayğılı, Hasan
This study aimed to produce an industrial waste-based novel magnetic nanocomposite (Fe@GPHC) by a facile and one-step hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method. In order to characterize of Fe@GPHC, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and elemental (ultimate) analyses were applied. Characterization results showed that during the HTC process, the Fe nanoparticles (FeNPs) were successfully incorporated on biowaste matrix. In addition, the Fe@GPHC was used to test its adsorptive property. For this, methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) were selected as a simulated pollutant. A batch method was used to perform the adsorption experiments. The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe@GPHC was 11 mg g(-1) and 8.9 mg g(-1) for MB and MO, respectively. This study provides a feasible and simple approach to design and synthesis of high-performance functional magnetic material in a cost-effective way.

Fuel properties of biodiesels produced from blends of canola oil and animal tallow
(SILA SCIENCE, 2011-04) Adin, Hamit; Altun, Şehmus; Yaşar, Fevzi
Biodiesel is an alternative diesel fuel that can be produced from renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oil or animal fats by transesterification with methanol for using in diesel engines. The viscosity and density of biodiesel fuels are important parameters due to being key fuel properties for injection and combustion process of diesel engines. These fuel properties mainly depend on the feedstock which is used in the biodiesel production. Also, lubricity is an important for diesel engine fuels due to the fuel injection systems are lubricated by the fuel itself. In this study, the blends containing 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of food-grade canola oil/inedible animal tallow in volume basis were prepared and converted into methyl esters by base-catalyzed transesterification. Effect of canola oil ration in the feedstock on the viscosity, density and lubricity were investigated. Lubricity was determined using the high-frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) test. Experimental results showed that the kinematics viscosity of increased as animal tallow ratio increased in the feedstock, as animal tallow itself is more viscous than canola oil. Also, density did not change much when blended feedstocks were used. Besides, it was observed that lubricity of biodiesel fuels from blended feedstocks was slightly get worse compared with pure biodiesels.

Prediction of pressure and temperature changes in the salt caverns of Tuz Golu underground natural gas storage site while withdrawing or injecting natural gas by numerical simulations
    (Springer Nature, 2019-03-13) Merey, Şükrü
Tuz Golu (Salt Lake) Underground Gas Storage (UGS) Project in Turkey is being implemented. In some of salt caverns, natural gas is currently stored. While analyzing the data of Tuz Golu UGS project, it was observed that this location is appropriate for safe underground natural gas storage due to its rock salt with high purity and very low permeability. In this study, many numerical simulations for a salt cavern in Tuz Golu UGS project at different gas withdrawal and injection rates were conducted by using TOUGH+RealGasBrine simulator. According to the results of these numerical simulations, the temperature inside salt cavern reduced below 0 degrees C from 53 degrees C within 20days at a rate of gas withdrawal of 3.33 million standard m(3)/day due to Joule-Thomson effect. The temperature inside salt cavern reduced below 0 degrees C within 25days, 40days, and 60days at a rate of gas withdrawal of 2.5, 1.67, and 0.833 million standard m(3), respectively. In order to avoid fracture around the walls of salt cavern, the temperature change inside salt cavern should not be higher than 30 degrees C. In the numerical simulations, there is no gas seepages from the salt cavern to other neighbor salt caverns, which are 600m away owing to very low permeability of salt rock in the study area. The implication of this study is that gas withdrawal and gas injection profiles are quite important to keep the temperature inside salt caverns at an optimum range for safe natural gas storage.

Electrochemical determination of melatonin hormone using a boron-doped diamond electrode
    (Elsevier, 2012-01) Levent, Abdulkadir
In this study, a boron-doped diamond electrode was used for the electroanalytical determination of melatonin in the pharmaceutical tablet and urine samples by square-wave voltammetry. Melatonin yielded a well-defined voltammetric response in Britton-Robinson buffer, pH 3.0 at + 0.88 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Using the optimal square-wave voltammetry conditions, the oxidation peak was used to determine melatonin in the concentration range of 5.0 × 107 M to 4.0 × 106 M (r = 0.998, n = 8), a detection limit of 1.1 × 107 M (0.025 μg/mL) and relative standard deviation was 2.06% at the 2.0 × 106 M level (n = 10). Recoveries of melatonin were in the range of 97.67–105%, for both tablet and spiked human urine samples.
