Hydrothermal synthesis of magnetic nanocomposite from biowaste matrix by a green and one-step route: Characterization and pollutant removal ability
    (Elsevier, 2019-04) Sayğılı, Hasan
This study aimed to produce an industrial waste-based novel magnetic nanocomposite (Fe@GPHC) by a facile and one-step hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method. In order to characterize of Fe@GPHC, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and elemental (ultimate) analyses were applied. Characterization results showed that during the HTC process, the Fe nanoparticles (FeNPs) were successfully incorporated on biowaste matrix. In addition, the Fe@GPHC was used to test its adsorptive property. For this, methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) were selected as a simulated pollutant. A batch method was used to perform the adsorption experiments. The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe@GPHC was 11 mg g(-1) and 8.9 mg g(-1) for MB and MO, respectively. This study provides a feasible and simple approach to design and synthesis of high-performance functional magnetic material in a cost-effective way.

Radiation dose estimation and mass attenuation coefficients ofcement samples used in Turkey
(Elsevier, 2009-12-16) Damla, Nevzat; Çevik, Uğur; Kobya, Ali İhsan; Çelik, Ahmet; Çelik, Necati; Grieken, R. Van
Different cement samples commonly used in building construction in Turkey have been analyzed for natural radioactivity using gamma-ray spectrometry. The mean activity concentrations observed in the cement samples were 52, 40 and 324 Bq kg−1 for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. The measured activity concentrations for these radionuclides were compared with the reported data of other countries and world average limits. The radiological hazard parameters such as radium equivalent activities (Raeq), gamma index (Iγ) and alpha index (Iα) indices as well as terrestrial absorbed dose and annual effective dose rate were calculated and compared with the international data. The Raeq values of cement are lower than the limit of 370 Bq kg−1, equivalent to a gamma dose of 1.5 mSv y−1. Moreover, the mass attenuation coefficients were determined experimentally and calculated theoretically using XCOM in some cement samples. Also, chemical compositions analyses of the cement samples were investigated.

Determination of fatigue life of the unidirectional GFRP/Al hybridcomposite laminates
(Elsevier, 2019-06-01) Deniz, Mehmet Emin; Aydin, Fırat
This paper investigates the effects of loading rate andfiber orientation on the fatigue behavior of the uni-directional glass-fiber reinforced-plastic/aluminum (GFRP/Al) hybrid laminated (GLARE-2) plates. Fatigue testswere performed at three kinds of stress ratios (R = 0.3, 0.1, and−0.1) on specimens with differentfiber or-ientations,θ= 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°, in the GFRP layers. All the fatigue results to be presented inthis article were obtained in repeated tension-tension and tension-compression at stress ratios of 0.3, 0.1, and−0.1, and the results were compared with each other. It has been shown that the specimens have the highestfatigue life in thefiber orientation direction at R = 0.3 loading rate. Also, it has been shown that the fatigue lifeof the specimens decreases as the loading rate decreases.

Sensitive voltammetric determination of testosterone in pharmaceuticals and human urine using a glassy carbon electrode in the presence of cationic surfactant
(Elsevier, 2014-05-10) Levent, Abdulkadir; Altun, Ahmet; Yardım, Yavuz; Şentürk, Zühre
In this work, the electrochemical investigation of testosterone, a steroid hormone from the androgen group, was carried out in aqueous and aqueous/surfactant solutions using a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. In cyclic voltammetry, the compound showed one irreversible and adsorption-controlled reduction peak. Addition of cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) was found to enhance the reduction current signal of testosterone, whereas, anionic (sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS) and non-ionic (Tween 80) surfactants exhibited opposite effect. Using square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry, the current showed a linear dependence with concentration in the range between 10 and 70 nM in Britton–Robinson buffer, pH 5.0 containing 3 mM CTAB. A detection limit of 1.18 nM (0.34 ng mL−1), and relative standard deviation of 4.12% for a concentration level of 35 nM (n = 11) were calculated. This method was successfully applied for the analysis of testosterone in oil-based pharmaceutical preparations and urine samples without any separation.

The effect of angle on the strain of scarf lap joints subjected to tensile loads
    (Elsevier, 2011-09-02) Adin, Hamit
In this paper, the mechanical behavior of the scarf lap joints (SLJs) bonded with adhesive (Vinylester Atlac 580) under a tensile load was analyzed. The effects of scarf angle at the interface strain distributions of SLJs were examined. The stress analyses were performed via three dimensional Finite Element Method (3D-FEM). The 3D-FEM code employed was Ansys (12.0). Experimental results were compared with the 3D-FEM results and were found quite reasonable. The results indicated that the maximum values of the normalized epsilon(x) strain values were determined at 0 = 60 degrees in all joints.

Voltammetric behavior of benzo[a]pyrene at boron-doped diamond electrode: A study of its determination by adsorptive transfer stripping voltammetry based on the enhancement effect of anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulfate
(Elsevier, 2011-07-15) Yardım, Yavuz; Keskin, Ertuğrul; Levent, Abdulkadir; Şentürk, Zühre
Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a member of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) class, is one of the most potent PAH carcinogens. The electrochemical oxidation of BaP was first studied by cyclic voltammetry at the boron-doped diamond electrode in non-aqueous solvent (dimethylsulphoxide with lithium perchlorate). The compound was irreversibly oxidized in a single step at high positive potential, resulting in the well-resolved formation of a couple with a reduction and re-oxidation wave at much lower potentials. Special attention was given to the use of adsorptive stripping voltammetry together with a medium exchange procedure in aqueous and aqueous/surfactant solutions over the pH range of 2.0–8.0. The technique in aqueous solutions had little value in practice because of too small oxidation peak current. This problem was solved when surfactants were added into the sample solution, by which the oxidation peak currents of BaP were found enhanced dramatically. The employed surfactants were sodium dodecylsulfate (anionic, SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (cationic, CTAB) and Tween 80 (non-ionic). Using square-wave stripping mode, the compound yielded a well-defined voltammetric response in Britton–Robinson buffer, pH 2.0 containing 2.5 × 10−4 M SDS at +1.07 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) (after 120 s accumulation at +0.10 V). The process could be used to determine BaP in the concentration range of 16–200 nM (4.04–50.46 ng mL−1), with a detection limit of 2.86 nM (0.72 ng mL−1). This method was also applied to determine BaP in model water sample prepared by adding its different concentrations into tap water.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of AA7075/AA5182 jointed byFSW
(Elsevier, 2019-06) Çetkin, Edip; Çelik, Yahya Hışman; Temiz, Şemsettin
In this study, AA7075 and AA5182 aluminium alloys were joined using different rotation speeds (980, 1325 and 1800 rpm), feed rates (108 and 233 mm/min) and stirred pins having two different geometries (conical helical and triangular). Microstructures of welding joints were examined by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Vickers hardness measurements were performed in the welding zone of samples removed from each welded plate. Tensile and fatigue tests were also applied to the test specimens taken from the welded plates. After the tensile tests, the surface fractures and possible welding defects were scanned via SEM. The best mechanical properties were obtained when conical helical shape stirrer pins were used. The values were 265 MPa for tensile test and 159 MPa for fatigue test. The hardness value was very close to each other and varied depending on the rotation speed. The highest hardness value was determined as 87 HV in the weld center at 1325-rpm rotation speed.
